The Alpe Adria Cycle Route starts from Grado, a lovely cultural and touristic town facing on the Adriatic sea. It was founded by Romans and become an important place Republic of Venice. Thanks to the Austro-Hungarian Empire this town was the first to develop marine turism of the whole Mediterranean basin.
Exiting the town we ride across the lagoon for some kilometers cycling on a dedicated bicycle path. Soon we arrive in Aquileia, one of the biggest towns during the Roman Empire. Now Aquileia is only a little village but preserve important ruins and the Patriarchal Basilica with an incredible mosaic floor.
We keep on a cycle-path build on an old railroad and we arrive in Cervignano, the most important town of “Bassa Friulana” and after a few kilometers we enter in Strassoldo, a spellbound medieval village with two well preserved castles.
Cycling mainly on low traffic roads we reach the star-shaped town of Palmanova. We entrer in this fortress town through a monumental door and usually we stop at he main square where you can drink a coffee or eat an ice cream with many other cyclists riding along this cycle route like us.
From Palmanova we arrive in Udine crossing the fertile countryside of Friuli. Again we notice the important role of the Republic of Venice in this places because in every little village we’ll find at least one graceful Venetian Villa.
Finally we come in Udine, the capital of Friuli region. You have to spend some time visiting the lovely old town and the castle placed in a panoramic place, on the top of a hill.
