After leaving the beautiful town of Spittal an der Drau, the Alpe Adria Cycle Route goes on along the Drauradweg (signed as "R1") cycle track. We arrive in Möllbrücke cycling on dedicated bike paths and quite roads, sometimes unpaved.
In Möllbrücke we leave the Drau valley entering in the Möll river valley. From here we follow uphill the Glockner Radweg bicycle route (marked as "R8"). This path runs on roads partly paved and partly on a natural surface. This stage has fairly undulating pattern as it often rises on the sides of the valley through small villages or farms. The valley is lovely: you’ll ride your bicycle through forests, meadows and small cultivated areas and near an artificial lake and its large hydroelectric power station.
When we arrive at Obervellach we leave the Glockner Radweg too, entering a glacial valley that will lead us to Mallnitz. We ride always uphill (the first 2 km have slopes of 12%), the national road n. 105 until we reach the monument to the National Park Hohe Tauern (Hohe Tauern National Park). From here a short downhill leads us to the characteristic alpine village of Mallnitz, where we can take the train to cross the High Tauern Alps.
