We leave Tarvisio cycling downhill on the cycle path made on the old Pontebbana railway. Next the "Tarvisio Centrale" train station begins also a beautiful bike path that leads to Slovenia. We continue straight on reaching the village of Coccau cycling sometimes on ordinary roads. After Coccau we pass the border entering in Carinthia.
Soon we cross the village of Thörl-Maglern and we keep on downhill always cycling on a good quality asphalted track alongside the national road (N81) which leads us quickly to Arnolstein. Arnoldstein is an important common market dominated by the ruins of a fortified monastery and is overlooked by the "Dreiländereck" mountain, the point where the borders of Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet.
In Arnoldstein cyclists have to cross the village cycling on the busy national road. Exiting the town you'll ride again on a bike path, made by narrowing a few meters to the national road. After the village of Pockau, the Alpe Adria Cycle Route moves away from the busy national road and connects to the "Karnische Radweg" bicycle route (R3), thanks to a pedestrian bridge on the Gail river. From here our path runs mainly on good quality unpaved roads made on the river banks.
At the end of this stage, we get around the city of Villach, cycling along the last part of the R3 bicycle route. When the Gail enters in the Drau river, we find the modern Peace Bridge (Friedensbrücke) and we start cycling on the "Drauradweg" bicycle trail (R1) which will take us in the historic center of Villach in a few kilometers.
