From Venzone you keep going on the Tagliamento river valley. Cyclists ride across the ghost village of Portis, abandoned after the awful earthquake of 1976, and enter in the village of Carnia, pedaling sometimes on a busy highway. The Alpe Adria Cycle Route continues crossing the Fella river thanks to the bridge of the old Carnia-Tolmezzo-Villa Santina railroad, entering in the "Canal del Ferro" valley. Riding along a quiet and interesting military road, cyclist arrive in Moggio Udinese, famous in the past for its San Gallo abbey.
From Moggio you can choose between two options. The first track stay on the right bank of the Fella River, climbing the valley using the beautiful little street that touches the townships of Roveredo and Ovedasso; I recomend this route only to strong cyclist because there are some steep hills to get over. The second option is the official route of the Ciclovia Alpe Adria Radweg: leaving Moggio Udinese, take the bridge over the Fella river and you'll enter in the cycle path that leads you to the former train station. Here it starts again the suggestive bicycle path that replaces the train tracks of the old Pontebbana railway.
After two long galleries, cyclists reach Resiutta and go on to the little village of Chiusaforte. Here you have to stop at the old train station now converted in a restaurant and a rest place. After Chiusaforte we ride in the wildest section of the "Canal del Ferro" (aka Iron Canyon), featuring numerous overhanging walls that close the narrow valley of the River Fella. We cross many galleries and some spectacular bridges.
At Dogna, all cyclists stop at the bridge crossing the valley of the same name to admire the spectacular view over the overhanging walls of the Jof di Montasio (here "Jof" means mountain). The bicycle route keeps on the old Pontebbana railway to Pontebba's door, with a short deviation on ordinary road near Pietratagliata, where you have to go downhill using a stairway! Our stage ends at Pontebba, an important place that for century was the border between Austria and Italy.
