From Villach, we go up the Drau River bank, riding on the Drauradweg (marked as R1 bicycle route). In this section, our Ciclovia Alpe Adria Radweg runs almost always on the banks of the river, partly on asphalted tracks, partly on dirt roads.
In this stage you cycle mainly on flat routes or cycle paths. There are only some short uphills located next the hydroelectric power stations that control the flow of the water of the Drau river. Just outside of Villach, the valley narrows for a few kilometers but soon it becomes very large and the villages seem to be lost between the extensions of neatly cultivated fields.
When you are near Feffernitz you have to try the historical wood-ferry that crosses the Drau and takes you in the opposite side of the river, near the village of Lasach.
Just beyond the village of Mauthbrücken, the bicycle runs off the river and runs alongside the highway and then the railway. Finally, after crossing the pretty village of Sankt Peter, you reach the outskirts of the town of Spittal an der Drau.
